The English Literature and the Film, Theatre and Television departments at the University of Reading are launching an MA in Samuel Beckett: Archive, Text and Performance from October 2016. This MA encourages both in depth study of Beckett’s work, and research into Beckett’s interrelationship with the broader contexts of, for example, literary Modernism, literature, arts and politics, modern and contemporary interdisciplinary performance, and collections based research.
We are delighted to announce the James and Elizabeth Knowlson Scholarship, available to candidates who have been accepted onto the MA in Samuel Beckett: Archive, Text and Performance in the Department of Film Theatre and Television, University of Reading, for entry in October 2016.

James Knowlson, Professor Emeritus in French, leading Beckett scholar and writer of Beckett’s authorized biography, Damned to Fame, established the world-leading Beckett Collection of manuscript material and other research resources at the University of Reading in 1971 (see http://www.reading.ac.uk/special-collections/collections/sc-beckett.aspx).
The MA in Samuel Beckett: Archive, Text and Performance allows students to work with the materials in the Beckett archive in diverse ways including research essays, creative writing, and practice-based research using the excellent facilities in the state of the art Minghella Studios. Professional artists such as Sarahjane Scaife and Lisa Dwan will offer masterclasses to those on the MA.
While the MA focuses on the work of Samuel Beckett, it will also develop archival, research and practical skills that are applicable to a range of career paths, including Ph.D. preparation, research informed creative practice, work with archival or museum collections, or in the film, theatre, television or radio industries.
The MA is taught by the University’s team of Beckett experts including Dr Conor Carville, Professor Steven Matthews and Dr Mark Nixon in English Literature and Professors Jonathan Bignell and Anna McMullan in Film, Theatre and Television.
