Friends, colleagues and the many former students of Jim Hillier will be greatly saddened to learn of his death on Sunday after a long illness.
Jim was instrumental in the development of Film Studies, first at the British Film Institute and then at the Department here at Reading, of which he was a key member between his appointment in 1979 and his retirement in 2005.
He was remarkable for the range and depth of his interests, with expertise in cinemas from many different countries and periods, and skilled in different approaches within the field. Even in retirement he devised new modules on Indian Cinema and published books on documentary, film noir and the musical.
He was a wonderfully generous teacher, an enabler of students and colleagues, and through his writing and editorial work enhancing the experience of film scholars and enthusiasts around the world.
He will be much missed.
